The VFW Sports Center has three ice rinks (Rink 1, H.A. Thompson & Sons Arena and First International Bank & Trust Arena) and a curling rink. It is home to a multitude of recreation activities, including hockey, figure skating, public skating, curling and golf. Located near the facility are the Sam McQuade Sr. Softball Complex, Sheila Schafer Junior Links, Bismarck Capital Curling Club, and Tom O’Leary Tennis Courts. The facility and grounds are surrounded by 2.4 miles of recreational trails.
The facility is also home to several local high school ice hockey teams, local figure skating and curling clubs, youth, and adult recreational ice hockey leagues, as well as public skating.
The ice arena serves as the home to the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League.
