Formerly known as the South Dumfries Community Centre, it was renamed in 2022 to honour the Gaukel family. Earl Gaukel died in 2013, and his son, Ken, died in 2021; both were former employees of the community centre. The community centre was built in 1970 and remained under the care of Earl Gaukel from 1970 to 1992 and his son, Ken Gaukel, cared for the centre from 1976 to 2014, taking over leadership in 1992 when his dad retired.
