Formerly known as the “Spruce Avenue Rink” this outdoor community rink was renamed after Henry Stainthorp, a retired ice maker who spent significant time and effort restoring the Spruce Avenue Community League. Known as “The Original Ice Man”, Stainthorp worked for 35 years at the Edmonton Northlands Coliseum for 35 years, where he was the head ice maker for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL.
Stainthorp also participated in an ice-making manual for outdoor community rinks, published by the City of Edmonton called, “Ice Making for Outdoor Ice Surfaces“. This is a comprehensive manual which sets out everything you need to know about making outdoor ice both with and without boards, explains the tools you’ll need, ice resurfacing patterns, common issues and remedies.
