Everett Arena

Hockey has a long tradition in Concord, NH. In 1883, St. Paul’s School was the site of the first hockey game ever played in the USA. Concord’s Douglas N. Everett became the Captain of Dartmouth College’s ice hockey team in the early 1920s; when he graduated in 1926 he was offered contracts from the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers but turned them all down for a career in insurance. He did play, however, for the American ice hockey team for the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, winning the silver medal as runner-up to the gold medalist Canadian team.

In the 1930’s, Concord citizens formed The Concord Ice Skating Arena, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, to build and operate an indoor ice skating arena. The arena was built in 1965 and named after DougEverett, for his skill in skating and hockey as well as his civic and business leadership. Despite offers from several professional hockey teams, Everett opted for a career in insurance in his home town.

In 1981, the City of Concord acquired the Everett Arena and the facility is now owned, operated, and maintained by the General Services Department. The arena’s mission is to provide a safe, attractive, and well-operated multi-purpose facility for the Concord community at competitive rates of other facilities in the region.
