The planning of the arena began in 1968 and the first ice opening of the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena was December 6, 1969. It was renovated starting in 2009 – nearly 40 years later, costing $7.6 million.
This is one of three facilities with indoor ice owned and operated by the Cowichan Valley Regional District. The others are the Cowichan Community Centre and Kerry Park Recreation Centre.
